These are my favourite musicians. Embarrassingly I've only seen 5 of them live. narrowly missed out on a sixth. And many of them are dead, so I won't ever get to see them live. I didn't realise for years that many of them were similar in how they played, full of vigour and enthusiasm. No-one ever accused Steve Vai of subtlety! Stevie Ray Vaughan, Martha Argerich, Jerry Reed, Jaqueline DuPre, Django Reinhardt virtually pound their instruments into submission. Much as I like to, even though there remains a terrible gap between them and me.
After a decade or so of gigging, I quit and got a real job. Then went to college for a break, but loved it so much I stayed. Oddly, music technology moved on considerably while I wasn't looking. Back in the day, computer-based music shenanigans were always a clumsy compromise. 20 years ago I bought a POD 2.0, and that was the first time I was ever impressed by an amp simulator. It wasn't perfect, but I loved that POD. Now, I've gotten a POD Go, their latest box of miracles. Wow. I can hear how rubbish my playing has become with such pristine clarity. I feel like one of those middle-aged men who are somehow the world's leading rugby expert because they played for their school team once.
I'll create a virtual tour of their oeuvre soon. For now, here's some guitars I've acquired over the years... I suffer from Gear Acquisition Syndrome, the restless search to buy brilliant ability, just like fashionistas who try to buy their personality.
